3 Most Common Reasons Your Back Hurts When You Exercise

Why Does My Back Hurt When I Exercise?

Back pain is the number two reason why people miss work in this nation. (Numero uno is the common cold.) Quite a few of my patients end up with unrelenting back pain that prevents them from chasing their tails, spinning to nowhere, splashing in the sea or just simple couch potato action. Billions of dollars are spent on drugs that ignore the cause of the pain and cause unwanted side-effects.

I treat athletes and active people and I hear this question often in my practice. I see 3 common reasons for back pain during exercise.

Imagine your house is sitting on a bad foundation. The only solution is to uncover the exact cause of the foundation damage and address it immediately - before the house slips off the mountain. Your feet are your foundation. 85% of the population has some degree of pronation (flat-footedness). This creates a shifting to take place in the leg bones that may alter the normal biomechanics of the ankle, knee, pelvis and ultimately the lower back. You may need prescription for your shoes to help support the foot and create a solid foundation. This simple fix has helped hundreds of my patients eliminate back pain once and for all. If the muscles that support your back are tight or weak lookout! Pain is sure to come! You would think to look to the back muscles but often times the pain originates from tight or weak hamstrings (back of the thigh), quadriceps (front of the thigh) or core muscles like the psoas (which attaches the lower spine to your pelvis and femur) and other abdominal wall muscles. These three areas support the lower back and if they are weak or tight forget it! You can just hang it up ‘cause pain is comin’! Muscle management is the key to eliminating this nuisance out of your life. Easy techniques involving soft tissue manipulation, , , , , , and sport specific exercises will reveal the root cause of your pain and you can exercise pain free again.

Your pelvis is your center of gravity and can easily become the culprit if is becomes misaligned. This leads to massive amounts of painful stress and nerve pressure in lower back region that can even send pain shooting into the legs. A quick x-ray can determine the mal-position of the pelvis or lower spine and a simple hands-on manipulation of the pelvis or spine can shift it back into balance and miraculously rid you of pain in your lower back and even your shoulder.

I see these very common causes in my practice every single day. Sometimes the cause of the pain is more serious. More substantial diagnostic testing like MRI can uncover additional causes of pain. However, all of these drug-free, affordable, and long lasting solutions have given hope to lots of my patients!

If your drug use has you loopy, sick to your stomach and frustrated give me a call and get to the bottom of it. Let’s fix it once and for all! There’s hope… Dr. Thomas, ""
